Honestly, Hotline Miami may have an alternate history/lore behind it, but it doesn't change the fact that you're just playing as an average guy on drugs shooting other average people.

This game teeters too close to reality for it to be an appable series.

Hotline Miami is based firmly in the real world. It takes place in Miami, Florida, and stars a normal human being playing vigilante against a Russian mafia. Other than the presence of the Russian Mafia in the USA in huge numbers and the incredible feats of the protagonist shooting and beating them all to death, there's really not much of a fantastical element here. Frankly, Grand Theft Auto is a less realistic game. It gets a firm no from me.

Hotline Miami is heavily based in reality, but diverges from it significantly in both lore and tone. The story takes place in an alternate history where the Cold War led to all-out conflict, and Russia won, and in theory focuses on how America exists in such a timeline. But you really have to dig into the dialogue and implications of the writing to notice this, because quite frankly, the alternate history isn't what the game focuses around. No real-world figures or organizations (aside from the countries of America and Russia) are present in any of the games, and the writing is less concerned with the geopolitics of the world than the internal lives and struggles of the characters. And these are universal things that don't rely on geopolitics - war trauma, drug addiction, estrangement from family, disillusionment. And while one could argue these heavy themes alone justify banning, well, we don't ban Mother 3, do we? And this isn't even getting into the tone and aesthetic - Hotline Miami is instantly recognizable for its psychedelic, retro style, and the over-the-top grindhouse action isn't exactly a realistic depiction of violence. While it certainly contains realistic elements, to call it "grounded in reality" is absurd.

My Opinion, It shouldn't, Because it does not match what constitutes a fantasy game. Hotline Miami is a game thats grounded in reality, and does not differentiate itself to warrant appability. For starters; The Alternate history in it is far too neglectable. It has no effect on the game itself, and there's no real reason to consider it more appable than a game like Assassins creed, Who's Alternate history is Waaaaayyy more in depth than Hotline Miami's, but we still banned it for said reasoning. Wanna know a game with a really in depth alternate history? Metal Gear Solid. And thats absolutely appable, because its much, much, MUCH more out there and wild than Hotline Miami.

Example, MGS3, Set in the same era, You're a Cold war spy trying to stop a man who punches with lightning, against a man who casts 'BEE'S' or a 104 Y/O Sniper master or a flying flamethrower wielder, With a cardboard box and wearing a tuxedo if you want. Hotline Miami? You take Drugs and go into buildings and kill everyone, then leave. Go get some pizza too. The story just-- isnt there. The Devs clearly dont care enough to give you a story, its just there to tie together the Game part of it.

Asides from Drug Trips to make the game have a trippy style, Everything is absolutely grounded in a state of reality, and there's major implications that everything is in a gritty real life scenario. So, while the game may look like technicolor vomit, In all actuality, its an entirely realistic game.

For Example;

All The Weapons you use? Are just standard guns and baseball bats. Even GTA has more unique weapons.

All the enemies you fight? Dogs, Dudes in Suits and Mafiosos.

All the locations, Buildings, and places on earth. 

Hell, even the most 'Fantastical' Elements, The Masks, Are just there cause "Its a Game, Therefore, Power ups." There's no real explanation to them, They're just kinda there.

There are absolutely no differentiating elements, asides from Drug Trips,Or the 'Alternate History' Thing, in which we cant really consider that enough to consider it different. Alternate history does not immediately set a game as a fantasy game, Its a matter of Tone. And Hotline Miami is a far too realistic tone for me to, in any decent respect, Consider voting anything but No.

As much as I want people to have access to the people they want to play, if Grand Theft Auto is banned, I cannot see how Hotline Miami would be appropriate. Apologises friends, i vote no.

You seem to have provided a strong argument that the game is grounded in reality while calling that absurd, Kzin. These are characters that could exist in the real world, suffering from problems that could exist in the real world, fighting enemies who could exist in the real world, using weapons that could exist in the real world... all taking place within a fictionalized depiction of the real world.

Do be mindful that the focus of your argument should be why the series is a good fit for a Nintendo site.

I can only see regular humans with regular guns being disruptive to the site's themeing.
