Shulk quickly dodged the first snowball, but another hit him in the side of the head. When Shulk turned to look at his assailant, a third snowball hit him in the face. He was about to retaliate, but Greninja dispatched of the Snover before Shulk could get a hit in. Instead, Shulk turned his attention to the only enemy that was left standing, the weird pinecone-with-antlers creature.

"That...thing. I don't think I should get to close to it. The ground there looks dangerously slippery." Taking a hint from the last time he tried attacking someone on ice, Shulk chose instead to hang back. He pointed his Fire Flower at the Frozum and unloaded the last bit of flame that it carried.

The Starvia Cryogonal was feeling as bad as its aim. It had missed Greninja yet again, but luckily for it the collapsing Snowman did not. The Starvia Cryogonal could breathe a sigh of relief as its adversary was buried in a bipedal avalanche of dying purple snow. Or so it thought. As it began to cockily make its escape, it was stopped by a narrowly missing Water Shuriken. Before it could take a look back down at the pile of snow, another shuriken shot out at it, shattering it like a pane of painted glass.

The crystalized remains of the Starvia Cryogonal snowed down onto the now terrified Snover. The Cryogonal’s mistake was getting cocky. A mistake the intimidated Snover couldn’t make if it wanted to. It’s target may be buried in snow but that was no reason to let up throwing snowballs. But how to throw snowballs at a hidden target?

Even if the Snover saw Greninja emerge from the snow, the slippery ice made it impossible to dodge out of the way of his malicious ambush.

The only enemy left on the battlefield, or rather, above the battlefield was the Starvia Frozum. And it was not going to go down without a fight. Swooping down to impale Shulk with its icy stalactites, the purple underworlder miscalculated and flew right into Shulk’s Fire Flower sweep.

“Spin with me!” Popo proposed to his partner.
“Yup!” Nana cooperatively complied. The Ice Climbers joined each other back to back and began to swing their hammers in the same rotating direction, intending to beat the Frozum like a top made of mallet.

Despite getting a single hit in, the ice was too slippery for the two to attain traction upon landing. Their cleats failed them and they slipped swiftly out of control into their partner Shulk.
“Can’t…Stop!” Popo grunted in distress. “Look Out!”
“Help!” Nana cried.
(Shulk, the Ice Climbers are coming at you. Out-roll their failed rolls or get hit with their attacks)

Retreating and taking the high road, the Frozum positioned itself to rain icicle shards down onto our intrepid troopers.
(Greninja, Shulk, Ice Climbers, it’s raining spikes. Roll 12 or higher to avoid them. Remember that you suffer -2 to your dexterity rolls. 4 spikes are coming down for each of you, take 6% damage for each failed roll.)

Greninja's speed was a bit offset by the icy ground, but he managed to dodge at least some icicles. "Greninja! (That's the last one standing! Focus and strike it at once!)" The ninja frog commanded. Looks like he did forget people wouldn't understand him. The heat of battle does these things to a person. The ninja frog brandished his Hydro Katana once again, attempting to slash the foe away.

Shulk threw away the Fire Flower, all of it's firepower gone, and went to attack the Frozum regularly. Before he could get close, however, Shulk heard the panicked cries of the two Ice Climbers as they spun out of control towards him.

Shulk attempted to jump out of the way but the icy ground made it difficult to maneuver. He failed to get out of the way in time, and the Ice Climbers crashed into him. They slid across the ice and came to stop in a nearby snow drift.

"Well...I can't say I wasn't warned" Shulk said, giving his head a shake. As he climbed out of the dogpile that was the two Eskimos, Shulk turned his attention to the Frozum once more.

...and still didn't get the opportunity to attack, as the Frozum decided to toss icicles in his direction.

“What did he-?” Nana began to ask, too distracted by their out of control spinning to translate Pokespeak.
“He said-” Popo began to clarify before the trundling duo crashed into Shulk. They duo-turned-twirling-trio ploughed into a nearby snow drift together.
“Come here often?” A dizzy Nana winked at Shulk.
“…Can’t feel legs!” She squealed, her daze broken by the shooting sensation of discomfort.
“Can’t feel mallet!” Popo squealed in echo, sifting the snow for his wooden weapon.
“Found your mallet!” Nana alerted him as she withdrew his mallet from the snow bank.
“Found your legs!” Popo thanked her by lifting her legs out of the snow and showing them to her. The sight of her legs were enough to comfort them that they were still attached and in one piece.
“Like Greninja said,” Popo reminded Nana as he helped her out of the snow and back up onto her feet.
“Strike at once!” He battle cried, pointing his mallet at the Frozum…But wait! Wh-where was it?

One slash of a Hydro Katana was all it took to thaw the Frozum’s frigid fury. It fell from the sky, crunching the ice under its weight upon impact. Its stalactites were severed and broken off and it collapsed into a slush of fur and antlers. A stray mountain wind blew the last enemy off the face of the mountain and into the purple misty abyss.

Once again, the mountain was cooled off by a cold silence.
“…Hey we won!” Popo soon broke the silence to proclaim.
“Finally.” Nana agreed with a wipe of the brow. This mountain trip seemed to take much longer than she remembered.
“We’re almost there!” Popo jumped up excitedly, pointing up to the next floor.
“Hup hup!”
On a normal day back in the day, the top of the mountain could already be seen from this point. On a day like this however, the world beyond the ice floor was shrouded by increasingly thicker fog. The only way to tell what awaited above was to go up and see for oneself.

((At long last, it's time to break through to the 7th floor! Be careful this time. It takes a 10 Strength or higher to get up through…but be warned. Whatever’s waiting up there might not like you rolling a 15 or higher…))

Well, telling everyone to strike the critter at once loses some impact when you take it down with one slash. Greninja, on the other hand, could care less about that slip-up, because he honestly thought it'd last longer. Well, at least they were clear of threats. Which meant it was time to go up another floor...which also meant to break the ice layer above them.

"Greninja...Gre?(I wonder...will I fail breaking this one?)" The ninja frog muttered within his breath, groaning internally. "Grenin! (Here goes nothing!)" With a swift hop he attempted to break that ice layer...

Thankfully, he had just the right amount of strength to pull through, and didn't make noises that would attract...whatever that was there on the floor. The ninja frog brought his hands down, ready to give Shulk a Helping Hand.

Shulk sighed in relief when the Frozum finally went down. That battle could have gone a lot better, and Shulk was freezing now. Well, at least they were almost to the top of the mountain now, at least according to Popo.

Shulk prepared himself to smash the ice, as ususal, but as it turned out, Greninja had already busted through, and was reaching down give Shulk a lift. Shulk grasps the amphibian's hand  and hauls himself to the next floor. Hopefully whatever was there  didn't hear him come up.

With 2 waves of enemies under their belt, and a bounty of fresh never frozen vegetables in their inventory (Pretty good time to use one or two Shulk), our intrepid climbers had finally reached on floor lucky number 7. They were near the top of the mountain, engulfed in the swirling purple maelstrom. And things were getting weird. Weird as in Greninja being the one to break through the ice before the Climbers.

The air was thick but breathable, and so was the fog. Besides the howling screaming swirling winds of the summit, which rotated around the mountain instead of blowing over it, all Greninja and Shulk could hear was a nearby growling noise.
It sounded familiar…but much more ferocious than before…wait, it wasn’t growling… it was snoring.

Upon closer inspection, the sound indeed came from a snoring beast. A purple beast of starvia, curled up upon itself. It was a Bearctic….and it was asleep.
Lucky break for our heroes. Their next opponent wasn’t even awake. With the right amount of stealth, they could sneak right past it onto floor 8!

(Okay guys, quick while you still can, roll 10 or higher to break through the ceiling up to floor 8!)

Lucky break for two of our heroes… because just as it seemed all was safe and sound… the snoring silenced was shattered by a slamming.
“Tada!~” Nana proudly boasted as she loudly smashed through the ice that Popo failed to prior. “Who’s the best?~”
“Not saying it.” Popo grumbled as he climbed up through the hole. “You got lucky.”
“I did not!” Nana stubbornly protested. “Just pure skill!”
“Your mallet’s soft.” She haughtily dismissed.
“Mallet’s Not Soft!” An offended Popo flustered retorted “It’s Solid Wood!” He demonstrated by hitting the floor.
“And Next Time-!” Popo was cut off by a thunderous roar.
It seems the Ice Climber’s bickering and hammer whacking woke the sleeping giant.
Nana emitted a gasp of fear while Popo emitted a gasp of regret as it stood up, towered above, and lumbered toward them.

“H-how hard’s mallet?” Nana asked again.
“I’ll show you.” Popo decidedly stepped up to the challenge.

Greninja, once on the next floor, realized that he was just silent enough with the ice breaking to not startle that beast rounding the next floor.

(Oh sweet merciful Arceus I thank you for your blessing.) The ninja frog thought to himself as he went to pick apart the next floor's layer. A skip, and a hop, and then a super jump towards the layer, the ninja frog readied a strike towards the layer...

The thin layer was shattered with not only tremendous ease, but with stunning silence. Greninja easily ascended to the next floor and offered his hands to Shulk. "Grenin! (Quickly! While the beast is asleep!)" He whispered to his red-clad partner.

As Shulk pulled himself though the hole, he heard a low, growling noise thought the fog. without stopping to see what it was, he ran quickly and quietly over to Greninja, who had already broken a hole into the next level. He was just about to climb though when he heard a crash. As it turned out, Nana and Popo weren't as quiet as he and Greninja were. The creature that they were so careful to avoid had woken up, and with a roar, landed a nasty hit on Popo.

Shulk looked up at Greninja, who had already jumped up. "Greninja, Nana and Popo are in trouble! We need to help them!" he called to him. Shulk was about to race back to where Nana and Popo were fighting when he realized that he was in no shape to fight. Fishing out a couple ears of corn from his pocket, he decided that a bite to eat was just what he needed.

(Shulk has consumed the entirety of two ears of corn! 80% damage healed)

After his quick meal, Shulk raced back to the Beartic. Raising the Monado, he let out a shout as the blade's blue light changed to a pale green. Shulk slashed the Monado down in front of him, and sent a wave of energy toward the Polar Bear Pokémon.

As it seems, Arceus has indeed smiled upon Greninja as he had successfully made it past the sleeping Starvia Bearctic. However instead of smiling, Arceus laughs at the hapless Ice Climbers for before they could follow in Greninja's flipper prints, they accidentally awoke the sleeping giant, as well as its wrath upon them.
Swing and smash as hard as he could, Popo stood no chance against the Starvia Bearctic's Icicle Crash.

Will Nana be able to face the Starvia Bearctic alone? Would anyone else in their party be brave enough to save them?
These answers and more will be revealed...

...Right now!
No, but that's okay because Yes!

As stalwart and selfless as he's inexplicably British, Shulk sacrificed his shot at safety to support his stranded squad mates.
Fortunately, his endeavors succeeded. The bad news is they did not succeed at effecting the bear whatsoever. The good news is they succeeded at distracting the monster long enough for Nana to dig Popo out of the brocade of ice.

“Popo!" Nana cried in distress, furiosly shaking the unconscious ice climber. "Don't leave me!" She wept, tears leaking from her face.
It was so cold at this altitude that Nana's tears crystalized and froze as soon as they left her face, pettering and pattering on Popo's forehead waking him up.
“N...Nana?” a groggy mini mountaineer groaned as he finally came to.
“Popo!” Nana cheered, elated and relieved that he was alive and recovering. “You scared me! Here!” She wasted no time shoving an ear of corn into his mouth before he could even get another word out.
In this condition, eating corn was preferable to talking, so munch on the corn he did.

“Yummy. Thanks Nana!” He hugged his partner gratefully.
“Don't thank me.” Nana advised, pointing his attention toward Shulk.
Shulk's Monado Purge may have missed, but the way the Starvia Bearctic was prowling toward him, it didn't intend on missing him.

“We gotta help!” Nana pleaded, much to Popo's agreement. “Got an idea.” Popo whispered into his partner's ear.
The Starvia Bearctic stood up upon its hind legs and wound up a Break Break aimed at Shulk, intending to smash him straight down through the floor when something from behind interrupted him.

“Hey Bearse Kiss!” Popo bravely called out for the the purple bear's attention.
“Over Here!~” Nana joined in the taunting.
Being an infected bear of very little brain, the Starvia Bearctic was indeed distracted and attracted toward attacking the Ice Climbers instead.

“Steady...” Popo coached as they held each other's hands, still in stance, patiently paused, poised for the propper time to pounce. “Now!”
Popo picked Nana up and threw her toward the ceiling with all her might.
“Hup!”
Upon impact with the cieling, Nana used what we now know is an Onion to break an automatic hole in the icicle ceiling above them.
“Ha!”

Behind her she trailled a rope in Popo's hands which she then used, not just to pull Popo up but to swing him mallet-first toward the Starvia Bearcic faster than it can avoid.

Knocking the Starvia Bearctic out onto it's back, Popo's job wasn't done yet.

“Grab On, Shulk!” He called out to the Monado boy to grab onto him so that they both can swing back to the hole together and be pulled up through the ceiling to the next floor.

(Because Shulk would've made it up through Grininja's crit hole anyway if he hadn't turned back to help, he doesn't have to roll this time again)

Once Greninja and Nana pulled their respective partners up through the hole, the two Ice Climbers collapsed onto their backs, panting off the adrenaline from the stunt they just pulled.
...and then it hit them. They both realized just where they were.
They both got up together and began to bounce up and down together.



“We Made It!” Popo cheered from the bottom of his heart
“Top of Mountain!” Nana cheered with equal joyfulness.
They had indeed made it. They all did. They had finally arrived at the Summit.
The Ice Climbers bounced together until the hype wore out enough that they needed to catch their breath. They ended their celebration with a high five. It was only now that they'd come down from their high and breathe in their surroundings.

It was surprisingly... Dark. As if the entire summit of the mountain was engulfed in a purple-black void. An empty night sky without any stars.

“...Where's the Condor?” Popo asked, scratching his head, looking around for the bird that always awaited them at the summit with the final stolen veggie. Was it flying just out of sight, hidding behind a layer of purple fog? That'd be easy to believe.

But instead of the condor's cry, a different voice was to be heard from behind the cloudy curtain.

“Oh Goodie! Guests! Hoohoo! It's been awfully lonely at the top!~”

Greninja let out what was the Pokémon equivalent of a ‘tch’. Were those two blind enough to not see a giant sleeping bear?? Regardless of frustrations, the ninja would go down and hell...weren’t for the fact that both lil’ eskimos managed to break the floor and escape the Pokémon below just when he was about to make a move. Huh, funny how things work sometimes. The ninja frog then he just kept on offering Shulk to get to the next floor.

“Grenin. (Hopefully, this’ll teach you to keep watch of your surroundings.)” the ninja Pokémon commented under his own breath as he observed the top of the mountain...at least until a jolly voice graced the amphibian’s ears.
It seemed that they weren't alone after all!

“Gre? (Who’s there?)” Greninja questioned, turning around until he was facing the source. He was about to ‘unsheath’ a water blade, but he stayed his hand. He just kept it nearby the blade to be safe.
This could be a trap devised by an infected enemy, for all they knew!

Good news! Shulk distracted Beartic long enough for Nana to get Popo out of danger! Bad new is, said Beartic is now has his full attention on Shulk! "Oh dear" Shulk said as he watched his Purge shot sail past the Beartic, which was prowling toward him with it's claws unsheathed.

As Beartic's ice-encased claws crashed into him, Shulk wished he had saved the Monado's power just a little longer. As Beartic stood over him and prepared a mighty chop that surely would have ended him, a turnip collided with it's head. The Beartic turned away from him to see the Ice Climbers, standing with mallets at the ready. As Beartic stalked toward them, Popo tossed Nana to the ceiling, breaking a hole in it, while Nana swung Popo toward the polar bear at full force. As the Beartic stumbled back, Popo reached out his hand toward Shulk.

Shulk grabbed on to Popo's mitten-clad hands and held on as he was pulled up out of danger onto the next floor. Once they were safely on the next floor,"That was close!" Shulk sighed as he collapsed onto the ice.  He rolled over to face both of the Ice Climbers. "Thanks for pulling me out of there. I would have been bear chow without the two of you."

His gratefulness was cut short, however, when a way-too-jolly voice greeted his ears. It seemed they weren't quite out of the woods yet. Shulk quickly grabbed the last piece of corn and ate it before preparing himself for yet another attack

Feelings of accomplishment, satisfaction and gratitude of being safe at the top of the mountain were undercut by a new voice permeating from behind a thick curtain of purple cloud.
As if making its grand debut, the voice pulled the curtain back and hovered into view with a hammy glide.

The Ice Climbers, Greninja and Shulk stood staring up at the figure floating flashy above his throne at the mountain’s peak.
He was big, he was green, and he was very round, surely an entity of neither love nor life, but rather of apathy and death.
Barring his scarves, he was as aptly dressed for the cold weather as the Polar Bear was. In addition, bracelets and rings on the muscular growths he called arms, he wore baggy striped pants and very sharp sandals. His roundest feature, his largely exposed belly had an eerily shining rosy a gem right at the centre where his cracking navel should be. Protruding out from behind his back were two branches of antlers across which bright spirited entities were doomed to swim. A horned skull was tied with a mop blond hair to his green skull. A pair of bright blue swollen lips smiled with intent at his guests, adding expression to his otherwise dead eyed face.

“…Who are you?” Popo broke the deathly silence to ask.
This seemed to upset the figure greatly as his big balloon smile deflated instantly.
“Why I’d Never!” He crossed his arms dissatisfied. “Hello!~ It’s Me~ Don’t tell me after all this time you don’t recognize Moi, the biggest baddest boss ever to make a mess on the NES!”

“Have we met?” Nana asked, just as lost as Popo.

The green ghoul opened his blue lips to answer before it dawned upon him. Looking at Greninja and Shulk, it was indeed as if he was seeing the likes of them for the first time.
“You know what, I actually don’t believe we Have!” He gasped, jaw dropping down to the tip of the mountain. “My my how silly of me, well in that case allow me to introduce myself!” He insisted with a clap, his enthusiasm quickly revived.
“The only thing more delightful than reuniting with old friends is making brand new ones!”

“The ever excessive, and long entertained, often underappreciated, but never obliviated….” He loudly and flamboyantly announced.

THANATOS:

God of Death!” 

Thanatos posed bombastically to his self-made fanfare.
“Fancy meeting you here.~”

“T-tanatos?” Popo repeated, unsure of the pronounciation.
“That’s Thanatos!” Thanatos corrected him with a baroque wink.

“Why’re you here?” Popo asked, stubbornly refusing to join the mode.

“Oh I am So glad you asked!” Thanatos spun, ever deeper immersing himself in his self-indulgent flair.

“Surely an Ice Climber like yourselves would understand the need to elevate your station in life?” Thanatos dramatically began by trying to relate to them. “So I, Thanatos God of Death am moving up from the drab Seafloor Palace at the barren bottom of the beautiful briny blue to the tippy top of the terraform! Icicle Mountain, Baby!” he glamorously yodelled for an echo who like Popo refused to join his song.

“But why Here?” Popo interrogated further, not fully understanding his motivations.
“I suppose you Pink and Blue wouldn’t understand.” Thanatos huffed in disappointment. “You’d rather be cut from a roster than be separated from Your partner.
Gosh oh golly gee I’m lonesome. I sure wish I had a little friend. A little friend just for me to play with. Just for me to pet and play with” Thanatos whined melodramatically, scooping up a piece of ice and crushing it in his mightily sharp nailed hands. “Gee I wish I had a little friend.”

Hearing Thanatos’ plight made the Ice Climbers look at each other, and then back at him with a stirring sensation of sympathy. Goodness knows what they would have done without each other.

“Ya know, I had a little friend once…” Thanatos anecdote, peaching into his pocket. He pulled out a creature all too familiar to the Ice Climbers.

“But he don’t move no more.”
It was the Condor. Dangling still and cold as death, frozen in Thanatos’ grasp. Thanatos gave it a childish shake and indeed, it did not move as it was frozen.
“No!” The Ice Climbers gasped in horror, all sympathy for the death god crumbled. “Condor!”

“What? You want him? You can have him.” Thanatos carelessly shrugged, unceremoniously tossing the frozen turkey at the twins. “It’s all you’s two’s fault really. You took too long to save him.” Thanatos began to complain.
“I mean sure ‘Sorry to keep you waiting’ was old Pitty’s catchphrase, but come on: You were late to the Halloween party, the Christmas dinner, the New Year’s fireworks display, Mardi Gras, the Passover, you even missed Both of our Sunny Summer Soirees! Breath of the Wild wasn’t delayed as much as you four!” He ranted in gaudy disgust.

“I’d be even more crossed, but the cold never bothered me anyway. Good thing I’ve got this scarf.” He luxuriously winked at Greninja.
“You’ll pay!” Popo barked vengeance for the condor.
“We’ll bop you!” Nana agreed, readying her mallet.

“Oh is that so?~ Straight to the dancefloor we go?” Thanatos sneered with divisive glee, agreeing to engage in combat. Not wanting to do the fighting himself, however, he resorted to other methods.“Very well then. Luckily for me, I Did find a new friend to pet and play with. The very best that no one ever was!” He dazzlingly announced, pulling an Underworld Ball (a fancily decorated Dusk Pokéball) out of his other pocket. With a dashing toss into the air it opened to reveal…

“Go Go Articuno!”

This was it! This was how Thanatos had been poisoning the mountain! He had captured Articuno and allowed the snow to rot in its absence. Thanatos must be stopped! But at the cost of defeating Articuno? There must be another way…

“Articuno! Use… um…what’s it called? Oh right, Blizzard!” Thanatos camply commanded as he drifted back behind the purple misty veil.

(Nana, Popo, Greninja, Shulk! Roll 10 or higher to avoid Articuno’s Blizzard. Or else take 25% damage and be frozen for a turn)

“Nana!” Popo cried out to his frozen partner.

(Okay guys, I’m gonna spell this one out for you: Either fight and defeat Articuno, or its captor. Thanatos is floating and hiding among the purple fog. You’d need to land a 20 to hit him, but 1 hit is all it’ll take to bring him down.)

So the figure had introduced themselves and....Greninja's reaction was a solid, but silent 'wut'. His reaction was all the more accentuated once Thanatos continued talking--aaaand he pulled out a dead bird from his pocket. Now's a good time to unsheathe the water blade. He kept his amphibian hand tight on the blade, until Thanatos just casually called upon Articuno. Whoever was looking at Greninja right now would see the frog tense up. He was against a legendary Pokémon, how could they ever win?!

...Unless...he could strike Thanatos down to stop them!

With an idea clear in his mind, Greninja started the pursuit...or rather, he would, but Blizzard incoming!

And a nimble evasion was successfully prompted, the hail having missed the Pokémon Articuno would already have a hard time damaging had things been going to your average Pokémon rules. "Grenin! Ninja! (You take on Articuno! I'll deal with Thanatos!)" the Ninja Frog Pokémon said to the three fighters. "Grenin, ninja, gre! (I'll provide you with a quick distraction! You act quickly and get the upper hand!)" He instructed further as he suddenly leaped forward and attacked!

After the second slash, the frog beckoned the three to wail on Articuno with a sign, before he jumped up, putting extra strength in the legs, to reach the god of death lurking above the clouds, katana ready for a powerful swing...
