Chapter 0: The Prologue
It started with a dream....
Gabriel was a child when his mother had gone away from their home on the coast to research the Dream World with a small crew of scientists she had known through her days in college. They had used various Pokemon and methods to research such a thing but Gabriel had never heard any updates or further information on it other than the tales his mother had told him before she left about a magnificent place where Pokemon go in their sleep. He desperately wanted to go himself, it sounded like a paradise. Why is this? Because Gabriel couldn't dream. He was born with a photographic memory and a fast learning curve. His brain couldn't shut off so simply, it was constantly turning its cogs and wheels thinking of things and puzzles and facts and about the future each night as he slept. He had goals, aspirations, desires; oh so many of them.
All his brain had given him during his nearly sleepless nights as a child was a blackness he couldn't quite describe. Just darkness and nothing else. If he did dream he never remembered them. His mother left him when he was nine, he was left with a house maid he called NaNa to take care of him on their beach home with a father who traveled the world and abandoned him sending letters every now and then, but soon even that stopped and he never saw his father anymore. He was an only child who just wanted to dream, but he always felt the need to be awake even with his eyes closed suffering from severe insomnia. Such a condition only got worse when just like his father, his mother had never returned.
It was just him and NaNa now. They had no Pokemon around the house, but they often watched across the beach and the sea wild water Pokemon enjoying the environment with frolicking chatter. He was curious about them, but alas, left them be. He lost hope that any of his family would ever return to him as he stared at his NaNa with tear filled eyes sitting on a rusty old bench upon the shore watching nature, and she would look at him and always say the same thing.
"Dry your eyes, watch the tides, they'll come again when the time is right."
She always did rhymes like that whenever he felt sad, but the more time ran on, the more tears that came. One day, he had enough. When he was twelve he had snuck out late at night as his NaNa was resting and headed to the nearest rail station. He boarded a train and headed to the research lab he overheard his mother mentioning when talking to NaNa before she left. It took nearly a full day to reach the destination, but with the help of his photographic memory and good sense of direction Gabriel made it to the very same lab his mother had visited. When he approached it though in the middle of a barren forest all he could see was a broken down warehouse. Rust, dirt, grime, and misery was all this place was. Gabriel looked very confused when he arrived. He entered the place and investigated only to find nothing but broken machinery.
As he investigated though, he noticed a gleam at the corner of the warehouse shining brightly. It was a key. He had picked it up and began trying it on every door in the building. He managed to notice one door cluttered with objects blocking its path. He started to dig his way to the door scuffing himself with bruises and scratches during the process but managed to clear the debris. He tried the key on the door and it opened perfectly. A loud creak sounded as it swung on its hinges granting Gabriel entry. The room was filled with maps, pictures of planes, and a giant photograph of a mysterious island. When he scanned through all the information he had gathered, he noticed more about the island. He thought that island must have been where his mother had gone off to, but there was nothing to say where exacty it was. He saw another picture of a plane, and what looked like his mom in front of it with a crew of others at an air field. She was waving hello with the biggest smile on her face while her blue hair glistened in the morning sunlight making the photo almost seem alive. There they were; the tears again. At twelve years old, it was like Gabriel could see his mom again only for a brief moment.
Minutes later he had heard a noise behind him and turned around only to find a man dressed in a lab coat kneeling beside him. He looked grim. He had white scruffy hair and a five o' clock shadow. He emitted a presence of deep sorrow and told Gabriel what would be something he wished he never had ever heard, the news about his mother's death. The research plane his mother had taken to the island crashed, and with it, her life was taken and all the research she had gathered including the exact location of the island itself. The man in the lab coat was helping oversee the expedition from the same lab Gabriel was standing in but didn't end up himself going on the plane, making him the sole researcher left after the crash.
"I'm so sorry my boy, I wish...I wish I could have never sent her...sent any of them on that journey. But now I know, nobody will ever be forced to go on such an expedition again, that island I don't think was ever meant to be found. The Dream World is a dangerous subject, and it's best it remain it's own mysterious entity."
Gabriel couldn't say anything. Only tears, only pain left him. The man went on to say Gabriel's NaNa sent him to retrieve Gabriel and bring him back home. The train ride back was the most grievous time in Gabriel's life keeping dead silent. He wondered if a smiliar thing happened to his father, and he worried. One thing was for sure, many years later Gabriel tried to reach his father, but to no avail. When he was twenty years old he left his home to educate himself across various lands, cities, and towns. He went from school to school learning all he could drifting to whatever peaked his interest. A few months later his NaNa had passed away from a heart condition and he was truly alone.
In his travels though he grew to enjoy the company of Pokemon more and more. He watched numerous battles and competitions, went on adventures, and even volunteered at various DayCare facilities expanding his wisdom and becoming ever more curious and atoned to the world of Pokemon. When he grew to be twenty three he decided he wanted to be a trainer. He traveled to a region called Celestion to put his past behind him and start fresh not as a drifter or some lonely sap, but as Gabriel Nite, a Pokemon Exhibitionist in the making and harboring a love for Pokemon that is boundless beyond the stars.
