Hi! I've got a big favor to ask!

I'm struggling to put out an app! Ever since I wrote up Toriel's app, I haven't been the best at putting out supportive moves. There aren't as many examples of these in the roster - and I feel like the introductory documents are especially vague about moves that aren't immediately applicable to combat scenarios. We're talking about moves that buff allies - not so much about heals - but more, like, circumstantial bonus and team set-ups! I'm struggling to understand what place these have in a character's kit. What does a good Support Move look like? How do we incorporate them without overstepping the boundaries of the system?

That's why I'm making this thread! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the "Dos" and "Do-nots" of writing support moves! If something would make a move like this more or less viable, please let me know in the responses! If you really want to go the extra mile - I could use some examples! Whether you pull them from one of your apps or write one up on the spot, I'd love to see some approvable moves that buff or support allies! Ultimately, the goal of this thread is to have the tools and know-how to write up a support move that'd be met with relatively little resistance when reviewed!

Hello there!

I’m a bit out of the loop in terms of our combat system, but I’ve made plenty of move sets in my time that I can pull from. A lot of these moves might not be maximized for efficiency, so keep that in mind, but as far as I’m aware they should be perfectly Ligal. Feel free to dissect them and rework them for your own purposes!

I’ll start out with some moves from my old characters, which have been put through the approval process, so these moves are probably the best to use for reference.

Seed Bomb: Sprouting from her hat-like flower, Lilligant produces an explosive seed that can be utilized by her allies or herself. Unfortunately, she can only produce one every 2 turns. [24%]

This one isn’t so much a buff, but it does provide allies with another combat option should they chose to take it.

Aqua Ring: Melody summons a ring of water around her person, entrenching her and any ally that chooses to hop in her ring in a thick coating of water. During this time, they will gain the Soak status and be healed by 1d6 + CHR Mod for every turn they have this status infliction (3 turns max). 2 turn cooldown.

When it comes to support moves, they can’t be all good all the time, otherwise they make combat stall a bit longer than necessary. I like to introduce an angle of exploit so that there’s a bit of a risk-reward angle. On one hand, this move heals your allies passively, on the other, it inflicts them with a status condition that the opponent could take advantage of if they have the means to.

X-Booster: Steve is always prepared for battle, as such he keeps the ever-popular Stat boost items on standby. He can only administer them to an ally, as they don’t quite work on himself. All Stat boosts last 2 turns with a 2-turn cooldown.
X-ATK: +2 STR Mod.
X-DEF: +2 CON Mod.
X-SP. ATK: +2 WIS Mod.
X-SP. DEF: +2 INT Mod.
X-SPD: +2 DEX Mod.
Moral Support: +2 CHR Mod.
Dire Hit: Increases Crit ratio, nat 17-19.

This is sort of a basic buff. A buff’s uptime should be equal or less than its downtime, depending on its level of buffness.

That’s all I got in terms of my player characters. I’ve got enemy encounters to show off as well though.

Tailwind: Causing an updraft, for 1 turn, Crobat and his allies will gain +1 to dodge rolls, while enemies gain -1 to theirs should they fail to meet a CON check. 3 turn cooldown.

This one is actually a bit weaker than it should be. Crobat was a bit of a lesser enemy. It could probably do with a 2 turn cooldown instead of 3 turns.

Nasty Plot: Honchkrow plots up a storm! This buffs both his and his allies’ damage output by 1d4 + CHR for the duration of 1 turn. 3 turn cooldown.

This move was made specifically with the encounter that Honchkrow was made for in mind. You could alter this to target one specific ally and it would be good for a 1 turn cooldown.

Ally Switch: Probopass changes places with an ally, taking the attacks that would initially be for its ally, however, the ally will also take damage intended for Probopass. 2 turn cooldown.

This move was made specifically for a tank class in mind, otherwise it’s not incredibly useful.

Wide Guard: Summoning a shield around all its allies, Probopass improves the stability of their bubble shields, taking only half the damage of attacks when bubble shields are activated for 1 turn. 2 turn cooldown.

Gravity: Intensifying the gravity on the battlefield, Probopass makes everyone feel heavier. Everyone’s CON stat will increase by x1.5. In turn, everyone’s DEX Mod will decrease by 1 based on how many positive CON Mods they now have. Lasts for 2 turns. 6 turn cooldown.

If this were to be used by a player character, it would need to have some sort of CON check to balance it out. In fact, I should have given this move a CON check in the first place.

Pixelator: Infusing an ally with his pixelator machine makes their body pixelated, making the bits of their body unstable, thus capable of phasing through or jumping in space to avoid attacks that they might not have been able to dodge otherwise. For the duration of the turn, the target may re-roll a failed dodge roll, only once per dodge roll. 2 turn cooldown.

It's a bit unorthodox, but I tend to be a bit out there when it comes to move mechanics.

Siege Pulse: Deals 16% damage. Target receives x1.5 extra damage if they are also hit by a fire or ice-based attack, resulting in an elemental explosion.

This is a sort of example of an offensive support move, though it was designed for a stronger enemy/mini-boss. I think it would be perfectly acceptable with a 1 turn cooldown or lower base power. The general idea is to incentivise specific moves and reward allies for strategic play.

Sorry if this is a bit much to absorb all at once, I wanted to dig up as much as I could. Hopefully this stuff gives you a good idea of what’s come before and what you can utilize for your own apps.
