(A Flashback)
It was the deep of night, and Ciel was leaning over her work table with a half empty cup of coffee next to her. A soft whine of dismay escaped her as her mind drifted from her work toward sleep. Her entire body hurt, and keeping her eyes open had become strenuous. She knew her mental faculties were diminished, but surely she could do some more work, right? Maybe not any programming, but there was still simpler work to do. There was just the problem of parts. She simply didn't have the parts she needed to rebuild these reploids lying around gathering dust. It was a problem that could be fixed easily enough by shopping around and probably doing some favors for whatever grifter decided to try and gouge her, an unpleasant but not insurmountable thought. However, it certainly limited what she could get done tonight, and she was starting to feel sick.
A hand grasped her shoulder and gave it a soothing little rub. Ciel looked up to find a concerned-looking Ashe watching her. The recently freed prisoner had been helping her throughout the night, as a way of saying thanks for helping her out of a tight spot. Ciel smiled weakly at her. She did appreciate the company, even if she hadn't initially wanted it. She knew it probably wasn't easy for Ashe to be up either.
Ciel had had to spend much of the day performing an emergency restructuring of the lab to house two reploids and a robot master while she rebuilt them. She'd gotten about as far as salvaging whatever parts she could and laying them out on three operating tables, as well as arranging three holographic monitors to display some work in progress blueprints. Some of the blueprints were concerningly incomplete. Carefully reverse engineering robots without the original around was an incredibly demanding task that most might even consider impossible. But thankfully she was well familiar with Zero's body from past wars and she could use Protoman's sister Roll's complete blueprints to sorta cheat and get a lot of the critical mechanisms out of the way by making the fair assumption that they were built similarly.
...But these boys weren't normal robots, were they? This was the first time she'd actually rebuilt Zero instead of just repairing him in a more complete state, and she couldn't help but notice that he wasn't built like any of the reploids she was familiar with: Namely X. It was presenting unforseen challenges and she wasn't sure what all these Dr. W's were about but it was slightly troubling seeing evidence of some egomaniac inscribing this living person with their insignia all over the place where no one could normally see it. She didn't particularly like the idea of replicating that branding, but she supposed it would be disrespectful to alter the past just for her personal comfort.
Protoman, on the other hand, nearly killed her! While working on him she had discovered that his damaged core was leaking nuclear radiation. And while her lab was built to be able to contain dangerous energies like that, she herself had been exposed to a non-insignificant amount of it before she realized she was in any danger and could quarantine the damaged core for safe disposing later. She had to wonder what type of irresponsible, pig-headed lunatic would put a nuclear reactor inside a person, let alone a person designed for combat that would implicitly put their core in danger of damage. Was this the secret to why the boys were stronger than Roll? She ran on sunshine and smiles and they ran on nuclear power?
