The Arcaneum had been oddly shut down today. 'Technical failures' Isonus had lied, to get this day alone. Failure is not an option - what a hollow lie. What a farce, a systemic ideology that only served to harm Isonus's life. Today was an important day in his life, one that wasn't positive. His chest ached, and his throat felt swollen with sorrow. The solemn half-elf approached the small framed photos in the fireplace across from the sofa in his dormitory within the back of that renovated dungeon basement. Things felt like home here, but, perhaps too much. Isonus, in remembrance, runs his fingers across the leftmost picture frame. An iconograph developed when pictures were new, back when... things were simpler. He looks, watery eyed to the picture of that Orc woman across his waist, hugging him so happily. He could practically smell the air of that time long gone. Isonus could hear the cooing of his children in those days, before... this. All of this.
"I won't ever fail you, my love." Echoed in his brain, words she spoke to him that fateful day he confessed his deepest desires.
To the next frame, a less... happy him, an infinitely happy wolf-anthropomorph standing beside him, arm draped over his shoulder, orc-elf and wolf-elf hybrid children happily huddled around their father. Isonus looked happy in the framed photo, but it was a cynical lie, a solemn vow that he'd never love again since then. The wedding bands that he'd melted down to form the corners of the framed photos forever a reminder of who had left the world that day. They both wanted this, and those years he'd spent with either one were years he wouldn't trade for the world. The immortal's chest ached a little harder, pain becoming a bit sharper as tears dripped from his eyes. They met the ground with an unusual hiss, the caustic nature of his sorrow.
"You'll always be me numba one, Iso!" Another promise given to him, another one he swore to keep.
Things weren't easy for him this day, things were definitely out of his comfort zone. He was a thaumaturge, a powerful, unfeeling scholar..! How could emotions like nostalgia, and remorse get the better of him? Easy, the charade was falling apart. He was just a broken man, longing to love again, longing to have something within his touch that was forever this time, something that wouldn't harken back to the ages of old when times were easy and life was uncertain. Certainty bred nihilism, and nihilism stands in the way of happiness. To that effect, Isonus found himself alone in this universe before he'd met Accord, though that didn't remedy his regrets, and his blame he took for the loss of his spouses, and outliving his children.
"...Everything I touch crumbles to dust."
Isonus collapses to his knees, slumped over in front of the glass-blocked flames, sniveling and sniffing... Slowly, he lets out his sorrows, and the anguished cries of the man who sold his world for power, for knowledge. A burden he would bear for all eternities.
