The setting is the Coliseum Stage from Smash 4, an open-roofed and rather perky gladiator styled arena dotted with statues of rather ferocious looking dragons and, oddly enough, a single giant statue of the patron deity of Palutena. Up above the normal arena, particularly vertigo resistant brawlers will discover a second arena. Skyworld has found anchor and serves as a second option for those who aren't afraid of taking a fall! Higher yet, so much so that there is now a conspiracy theory that stadium matches are faked in a warehouse in Neon Heights, Final Destination can be found lurking above the extremely toxic clouds hidden just behind the life sphere's shields. But isn't fighting exposed to the elements dangerous, you ask? Certainly not! We're 99% sure the starvia cannot survive in space.
Here's how you start a match:
Create a thread in Sunshine Stadium. The subject should include the names of the combatants in an X vs Y format and the description should include the version of the stage you're using, what type of match it is, the activity requirement, and whether or not you need a referee. If a referee joins a thread, that last bit should be removed from the description. Every match can have between 2 and 4 players, either as a team battle or a free for all.
On activity requirements:
To ensure that the stadium keeps moving and that matches don't become an exercise in frustration, every match has an activity requirement. This can be either 1 week or 2 weeks, and is the amount of time an opposing player has to make their post before they are penalized. When a player fails to meet this deadline without providing an explanation prior to the deadline passing that either qualifies as an emergency or is agreed upon by the other player / ref, the other player's attacks are assumed to hit. If they miss this deadline twice, they automatically lose the match.
Note: Intentionally stalling a match so that no progress is made by either player for several turns will result in disqualification for the same core reason.
And the rewards:
Regardless of which match type you choose, the following rewards will be given out once a match reaches its conclusion.1: A courteous concession is a forfeit. You can have your character unexpectedly go down early in the match or flee to achieve this result. This does not apply to grudge matches when both players agree to end the match early after 5 or more turns.
Condition Winner Loser Match Complete 11 5 Courteous Concession1 10 4 Incomplete Match2 10 1
2: When a thread is archived, the loser is determined as the combatant who neglected to post, causing the thread to be archived. Points will be distributed IF and ONLY IF one round of combat has been completed.
In addition to that, if your fight is being refereed you can get extra thunder badges for impressing the referee. This applies to both the winner and the loser, and you can get up to 3 extra badges at the referee's discretion. The first 10 Thunder Badges that a combatant receives will gain them an extra move slot (either Primary or Special), but after that it will be every 20 Thunder Badges.
What do referees do and who can referee matches?:
Any staff member can choose to referee a match at any time. Additionally, community members can sign up to referee matches themselves if they're interested. A referee can either post between the posts of the fighters, making commentary on the match as it goes on, or save their commentary for the end of the thread. Make sure to state which when you join a thread so that no one is waiting for you to post unnecessarily. Referees can judge a match using any character not owned by another player, but cannot judge a match that they themselves are participating in. If you're interested in becoming a community referee, please send Mari a private message using the following template:Experience judging RP fights, if any: (Please elaborate on your answer a bit if you do have experience)

Match Types
Grudge
No ref. No final smashes. No items. No problems. The only catch is that you cannot earn extra thunder badges by impressing judges. Note: The character 'death' penalties preventing you from joining missions do not apply in grudge matches. Fight until one characters' HP reaches 0 or until both players agree to end the fight after a minimum of 5 turns. Victory is decided by points, which are calculated for each player by adding up the following values:
Appeal Points
Damage their opponent took
60 for KOing the opponent
Professional
There is a referee. No final smashes. No items. Fights end after 5 turns. Your opponent will never die or trophy unless you explicitly make it known that you are attempting to trophy them in your post, at which point you will be allowed to do so--however you will be disqualified and the match will be treated as a forfeit. Victory is decided by points, which are calculated for each player by adding up the following values:
Appeal Points
Damage their opponent took
30 for each extra badge obtained
Special Matches
Post these at the top of your thread on creation if you want to invoke them.
Post these at the top of your thread on creation if you want to invoke them.
Final Smashes
Final Smashes are allowed.
Item Match
Characters may bring up to 3 items into the arena with them to use in their fight.
Sudden Death
The audience riots and explosives begin flying! Roll dexterity to dodge the rain of bob-ombs each turn, with each failure resulting in 32% damage taken. A roll of 12+ is a succesful dodge, however a roll of 16+ will allow you to grab the bob-omb and throw it at your opponent!
Role Reversal
The two fighters switch their moveset with their opponent. (Transformations are disabled once the match has started)
Body Swap
The two fighters switch their appearances and stats with their opponent. (Transformations are disabled once the match has started)
Royal Rumble
The combatants can bring in a surprise companion or player character from their roster to back them up during the match.
Special Mechanics
These mechanics only exist in the stadium, but are very important.

Appealing
Appealing to the audience is an excellent way to bolster your performance. Simply do something flashy and make a single charisma roll at the very end of your turn! The number of appeal points you get is equal to the damage you did during that turn, with the following modifiers at play:Rolling 0 or below causes the audience to throw things at you for a flat 10% damage. This cannot be avoided.
Rolling 1-10 causes you to gain zero appeal points
Rolling 11+ causes you to gain appeal points equal to the damage you did that turn
Rolling a natural 20 causes you to gain appeal points equal to 1.5x the damage you did that turn, rounded up.
For every 100 appeal points a player gains, the audience will throw an item at them! Ask a ref or staff member to roll the Wheel Of Fate! for you and the item you get is yours to use!
Domination
Where appeals are all about making yourself look good, domination is aptly named because it is about making your opponent look bad. Namely, by giving them an especially good thrashing or appealing to the crowd's sense of humor or karmic justice. You can't do both during a single turn, and if you try you'll wind up sabotaging your efforts. At the cost of an extra action, any move can be turned into a domination variant. This causes it to damage both the opponents health and their appeal points. You also have a chance to take those appeal points for yourself by making a charisma roll using the same success thresholds as an appeal.
Honor
While it's certainly the most efficient way to go about things, not every fight needs to be a rush to beat your opponent down as hard as possible! At some point, you may feel like taking it a bit easier on your opponent. There are rewards for that, depending on how you choose to do this. All rewards take the form of appeal points.
- Healing an opponent of status conditions grants 2 appeal points for every turn of status cured, or 10 points for statuses without turn limits.
- Healing an opponent after they are hit by a critical attack grants appeal equal to 1.5x the amount healed
- Grappling an opponent to restrain them (See: They don't take any damage while grappled or directly as a result) grants 20 appeal points
- Releasing an opponent from a mechanic that prevents them from using 5 or more of their damaging attacks (or every attack they have, whichever is lower) grants 40 appeal points
