Mario was sitting at their usual meeting table when they had meetings over major plans with only Eggman and E. Gadd in the room and a TV on the wall. F.L.U.D.D. sat in it's own chair. They listened in silence as the announcements went over the news from Samus before... she announced Sonic had something to say. "Huh? Sonic did not-a tell me anything about this..." Mario said as he scratched the back of his head as he let the news play out... And to say the plumber was not happy was to put it lightly. Mario slammed a gloved hand on the table. "He's moving ahead with his plan and threatening people that do not want to follow him?! What is wrong with him?!" Mario called out in shock. He... what is going wrong with Sonic?
"Perhaps Sonic did not take the too slow joke too well," E. Gadd joked to lighten the mood a bit. Eggman seemed pretty unphased by the news almost like he was not surprised in the slightest. "Unlikely," F.L.U.D.D. added, apparently taking the old scientist seriously. "What is wrong with Sonic...?" Mario asked, starting to be at a lost of words after the initial outrage. "This is not Sonic," Eggman said simply in a matter of fact tone. Mario looked at him with a questioning look as the scientist seemed really confident in his claim. "I know Sonic better than anyone. No one has known Sonic as long as I have, not even his friend, Tails. I'd know better than anyone if he was acting strange. And I'm telling you, Sonic is long past what is normal of him at any stage. Even I would never blow the planet to dust with everyone and I'm the bad guy," Eggman clarified.
Mario looked back and it did seem weird that Eggman was on his side when he was a villain to Sonic. "We've come up with a few theories while you boys were taking down that bull guy. We've narrowed it down to a few. The first is that he may be one of those Special Infected reported lately, infected but able to keep up the appearance of being normal. He could also be the old imposter routine I am sure you are familiar with. Finally, he could secretly have a twin brother," E. Gadd hypothesized, which resulted in Mario turning his questioning look to E. Gadd on that last theory.
"... He insisted on that one. Sonic does not have an evil twin," Eggman reported to the plumber to clear that doubt up. "So, this could be a trap for those that agree with his plan?" Mario asked. "We think so, boy. That means someone has to stop him. Unfortunately, Samus still needs recovery after the recoil from that shot. So, looks like you will need to go yourself, kiddo!" E, Gadd suggested.
"You expect me to just walk up to that site and take him down on my own? Wouldn't that be seen poorly by the citizens? And what if I fail?" Mario asked if the scientists have thought this through. "Then the world is doomed of course!" E. Gadd said cheerfully... Which resulted in Mario's mustache drooping, "... We are not sending you alone. We have some other matters to discuss but it's best this one be a small scale operation to not raise suspicion from Sonic's supporters. We will contact Samus soon on the other matters. Also, this is who we plan to have help. They are a bit of a star and have been a big help for the Life Sphere," Eggman stated as he pushed a laptop towards Mario who looked at the records for a moment and thought about it... If they are suggesting what he thinks they are... After a moment, Mario nodded. "Okey dokey, then we will discuss the other things."
