It had been years, ...not that... anyone... acknowledges the passing of time, since Lyndis was rendered comatose following her attempt to save Pac Man. Being a magic nurse, the kind not really trained to do actual nurse things but kept around because of her miraculous healing abilities that took some of the strain off the underfunded staff. She had been entrusted to make sure a coma patience got fed, a simple enough chore that helped Nurse Joy keep her schedule free for other patients. It was simple enough, but one day she entered to find the girl she was taking care of was awake. She tried to communicate with her, but she was unresponsive to both words and touch. Confused due to her lack of medical training, she continued trying to get a response out of the comatose girl before eventually realizing something was indeed still very wrong. And then, Arle tried something she'd never had the foresight to try before because Nurse Joy had never suggested this patient actually needed healing. ...And also because this plot point is extremely contrived in hindsight. Wait shi--
"Ressurectia!" Arle incanted, enveloping Lyn with a powerful healing light that hypersaturated Lyndis' body with healing magic, ...undoing the brain injury that had put her in a coma in the first place. For the first time in a long time, Lyn truly woke up. And the first thing she did--was scream.
Needless to say, the sudden outburst freaked Arle out as Lyn awkwardly rolled out of bed and immediately collapsed onto the ground. A surge of intense pain washed over her as she accidentally pushed her body too far by immediately trying to get up. Arle had given her her mind back, and yet her body... Her body wasn't technically injured. She had simply turned into a weakling that couldn't stand on her own two feet. Magic could no more heal that away than it could turn the neighborhood nerd into Little Mac. ...Actually magic can definitely do that, but not the healing magic Arle was using. Arle gingerly approached Lyn, not really sure what to make of what was going on. "Hey... Are you--?" she began, only to kinda stop and stare as Lyn began crawling, with great effort, out the door. Arle winced at the sight, but decided to follow. No matter how much moving hurt, and it hurt a lot, Lyn was determined to feel the breeze on her skin. Though she hadn't been properly conscious for years now, her body ached for it. Arle awkwardly followed with a very concerned expression as Lyn forced herself to slowly crawl outside, where she promptly collapsed in front of the hospital. She was in a lot of pain, but she could finally feel the breeze.
...Arle just kinda looked down at the woman curled up at her feet, trying to grasp what had compelled her to run like that. After a moment, seeing Lyn had come to a stop and likely wouldn't be getting back up, she crouched down next to her and placed a hand on her shoulder. "...Hey. I'm not sure you should be out here. You're not better yet." Arle very softly remarked. In response, Lyn weakly tugged her shoulder away from Arle, rejecting her touch. She was in so much pain that her responses mostly only came out as angry grunts. Arle thought about this for a moment. It had become apparent to her that Lyn didn't want to go back inside. She reached out again, this time caressing Lyn's side in a somewhat affectionate manner. "Someone might step on you..." Arle softly offered. This confused Lyn and put her off for a moment, but moving to resist this would hurt a lot. Arle began to heal Lyn, soothing her pain and helping her body recover from the serious injuries she'd just caused herself. All the while, resting her hand on Lyn's side where she laid curled up. She wanted to teach Lyn that this was the touch of a friend, and it worked. Lyn was confused, but she relented. As upsetting as her current predicament was, this girl was clearly trying to be nice to her. "Let's just move over to this bench a couple of meters away. Okay? That way we can try sitting." Arle offered, making a point to describe the bench as she had noticed Lyn couldn't lift her head and likely wasn't aware it was there. She carefully shifted her arms underneath Lyn's back and thighs, lifting her with great effort considering Lyn was bigger than her and she wasn't that strong, before carrying her over to the bench and sitting her down. She then sat next to Lyn, scooting close and moving to pull Lyn against her so that she could lean on Arle for support. She was worried she wouldn't have the strength to sit up. She then moved to take Lyn's hand, bringing it over into her lap. She could see the motion hurt Lyn, so she resumed healing her. Lyn weakly gripped Arle's hand in return, and Arle smiled sweetly up at her, recognizing the acceptance of her physical show of affection and support. "...Please don't take me back inside." Lyn softly requested, the pain having died down enough that talking was easier. "Alright! We can try sitting out here today! I'll stay with you and make sure anybody looking for you knows you're being taken care of." Arle supportively replied. While deeply confused by this stranger being so nice to her, Lyn was decisively grateful. "...Thank you." she weakly replied, breathing a deep sigh in relief and closing her eyes to relax. She needed at least the better part of a day outdoors before she would be comfortable again.
"...Soup?" Arle offered. Lyn cracked an eye open to see that Arle had indeed brought a bowl of soup along. She was about to object on the grounds that she didn't want to lift an arm, but Arle held up a spoon and offered to feed Lyn without being asked. How did she know..? She hadn't properly taken in the full scope of her predicament until now. As Arle began feeding her though, she began explaining the perhaps obvious. "My name's Arle! I'm working part-time as a nurse here. I've been helping take care of you fooor ...years now." Arle explained, unable to properly recall exactly how long she'd been doing this. Lyn's memory began coming back to her. Riiight. She must've been hospitalized after that fight. But ... years? How long had she been gone? How old was she?? What a frightening thought. "...How old are you?" Lyn curiously resigned to asking. "16" Arle replied. " . . . Huh. Me too." Lyn thoughtfully replied. "...I feel like I can't even move." Lyn added after a moment. "It's okay. I'll stay here and help you with anything you need!" Arle replied, aware that Lyn really hadn't had any visitors to her recollection. She wondered if she'd lost her family when coming to Li, but decided not to ask. Lyn could open up to her about that when she was ready. It seemed like life was hard enough for her right now without Arle prodding for details. "I can get you things, help you get outside without hurting yourself, keep you company... I can even help you learn how to walk again!" Arle offered. Lyn raised a brow at Arle. She could tell Arle was trying really, really hard to help her feel better. ...It was kind of working, at least somewhat. Her situation certainly felt a lot less overwhelming all of a sudden. Lyn slowly shifted to drape an arm around the smaller girl, lightly side hugging her in response. That was enough, for now.
It was a new day, and I don't mean the morning. Lyn had been relearning how to walk, beginning slowly with the need for Arle to help her and then just walking with Arle for the company, and just in case something went wrong. She'd slowly regained some semblance of independence, and now she could even, to a degree, take care of herself. Her weapons had been stolen from her, by who she had no idea, but Arle had also helped her find a simple sword to use. One night, they'd been discussing her magical talents when the subject of wind magic came up and Arle had helped her find a couple of tomes she could use as well. Apparently, there was a school in the life sphere now. Today, they were walking hand in hand down the street together. "Y'know, you've got a lot of heavy armor on for a mage.. But only on your chest... I've never seen a mage wear anything like that before." Lyn mused aloud, puzzling over Arle's attire. Namely, the big, somewhat bulky breastplate and shoulder guards. "--Oh. It's not that heavy! I can still move around pretty well in it." Arle replied. "Right--But what about the rest of your body. Aren't you worried you'll get attacked there instead?" Lyndis asked. "...Well--No! I mean it'll hurt, but as long as I can still talk I can just heal my own injuries!" Arle replied in a matter of fact tone. "--Oooh... Now I understand. You don't need a tome or a staff to cast magic, so just wearing that little bit of armor must make it nearly impossible for an enemy to disarm you during a battle." Lyn thoughtfully observed. "Yup! Exactly! I couldn't wear a whole set, but just a few pieces really helps me feel a lot bolder out there in the war zone." Arle explained. " . . . You seem too nice for war." Lyn softly angsted, distressed by the thought. She'd never even seen Arle fight, so the thought of Arle going up against some thugs twice her size was a little jarring. Arle bashfully chuckled. "Yeaaah... I'd rather be in school or going on adventures with my friends, but Li hasn't really given us a whole lot of room for choice y'know? Sometimes it's nice to just sit back here and help from inside the sphere though." Arle replied, not taking offense to the remark. She was too nice for war. Killing people simply wasn't a thing she was comfortable with. "Yeah... You're a big name here, aren't you? I'd never heard of you before, but now you're the life sphere's greatest hero." Lyn speculatively remarked. "--I-I don't know about that~ I wouldn't be able to fight so hard if I didn't have so much support from my friends and family. ...I'm just always looking for new ways to help, y'know?" Arle bashfully replied. "--Hey, what's with the uh..." Lyn curiously asked, gesturing to Arle's head with her free hand. "...Tiara? What's that do?" Lyn asked. "--Oh, that? That just protects me from the rain." Arle replied, flashing a thumbs up. Lyn blanched. It didn't even cover Arle's head, leaving her to imagine how it worked. One thing was for sure. The two girls had become close friends during Lyn's recovery. They could be seen taking a walk every morning, holding hands and enjoying each other's company. Soon it would be time for Lyn to rejoin the fight. She was trying to enjoy the limited downtime she still had, now that most of the severe pain was gone.
