Time seemed to slow down for Luigi as he marvelled at the princess gracefully diving over his head into the water behind him. His wide eyes caught every wet glistening detail of her form as she travelled over him in a swift precise arc. Everything went back to normal as soon as she splashed into the water, however, and Luigi himself had only realized how closely he was watching her when he blinked and could still see detail again in his mind’s eye.
Time physics or water physics aside, Luigi was not going to let this angelfish swim away and leave him behind. Diving in and following behind just as he had before. Now familiar with the difficulty he had following her before, the new dynamic of knowing where they were going, made things easier for him this time. Thanks to the way she dived this time, Luigi also got a better view of her swimming techniques. No wonder she won gold at the Olympics. If he and Mario took her example, water levels would be way less cumbersome. But observing better stroking techniques or not, Luigi realized he was falling behind. His plumber’s overalls were weighing him down, whereas the princess had no such trouble. What was he to do? Start undressing underwater? Where was he going to put his uniform? He didn’t have love magical storage like she did. Having to think of another solution and fast, Luigi came to one.
He hunkered down and clenched his body together, and with a familiar whoosh sound, mixed with bubbles, Luigi shot sideways through the water closer toward Peach like a torpedo. Green Torpedo: a fireless, bubbly, underwater variant of the Green Missile. Not exactly a practice recognized by the Olympics, but it allowed Luigi to keep up with the far more hydro dynamic princess.
Being within arm’s length of the princess again, bought all of Luigi’s anxieties back into arm’s length. The heart pounding, the redness in the face, the need for more air, all of it. To put a cruel twist to describe I, it was like he was allergic to beautiful women. As hard as this was for him to do, Luigi tried the option of closing his eyes as he swam, relying on underwater sound and spatial awareness to keep up with her. It was worth sacrificing looking at her to get to continue swimming close to her, he figured. With his eyes closed, only opening them periodically to confirm his navigational estimates, Luigi’s thoughts drifted ahead to the future. Once they were on dry land and out the way Peach claimed she knew, they could both go back home to the Mushroom Kingdom and things could go back to normal.
The princess could reassume her place upon her royal throne, and Luigi could return to her royal boiler room and make sure the castle’s plumbing was as it should be. Everything would be as it should be.
She had her place, he had his, and they were to be nowhere near each other. Happy ending. Right? Well for her surely it would be… Right?
The Mushroom Kingdom needed her back. She needed to be back there where she was safe. But he couldn’t dare prolong it. As much as she made his stomach flutter since Bowser stopped it stop turning, Luigi loved every second spent alone with the princess. As much as he needed to get her home as soon as possible, every moment between now and soon was precious. He didn’t want it to end. But to even think in such a way was wrong. It was selfish. And he knew it.
Which was exactly why this had to end. He had to get her back home immediately, before something in his heart compelled him to jeopardize the mission. What if he sabotaged it by leading her in the wrong direction, dooming them to wander lost for another day? He couldn’t do that to her after all she’d been through. He’d be no better than Bowser.
But at the least he could’ve been better than a blind Cheep Cheep. Congratulations Luigi, you managed to dodge her kicking feet, but you just Green Torpedoed your way into another collision with the princess. How many times are going to do this, man? Is bumping into her your way of getting the most of your time instead of stalling?
