Alignment: Chaotic -- Good
Motto: "Hey, if there's a guy bein' a jerk to you or a few kids, let me at 'em!"
Allies/Friends: Nice Gals/Guys, Children, Drinking Buddies
Enemies/Rivals: Super Mean Gals/Guys, Equally Musclebound Fighters of Physical Strength
Backstory: Born among a similar placement of words, yet exists of its own will, Delineas is a place where magic is reliant on symbols and calculated efforts rather than simple willpower. Civilization has become reliant on what are known as Runes, the exact term for symbols dictating magic, which allows people to determine strict or even loose laws of spellcasting. The world is not advanced enough for more contemporary results. Quality of life has increased, but this realm is more akin to a medieval structure. There are doors which open and close upon the touch of a rune, but there are no televisions or cellphones. Doctors exist, but the concepts of cells and the structure of the deoxyribonucleic acid molecules are not even conjecture. Inhabiting this world are the typical humans and the more monstrous beastkin.
The latter is the true origin of the lion. Benedictus was born in a country known as Sophos, a counterpart to Greece on the various worlds called Earth. He was raised in a traveling boathouse under the watch of his mother, Corinna. The beastkin woman was a single woman, Benedictus's father having abandoned them when the young cub was just a few years old. Life was on the rough side because of this. Often did the cub's mother go out and do the odd job or two, leaving him to be alone once he was old enough. While there was solitude, Benedikt found himself plenty to entertainment in the form of legendary tales, daring heroes, and fame alongside all those riches. This alongside with the lack of a parental figure for hours on end made for an interesting time with others.
Dreams of being a heroic figure start small, and for the young lion were displayed as reckless acts. Often he found himself in physical fights with others who dared to hurt someone else, and just as often proved to be a difficult time for his mother. The struggles with bullies garnered a reputation among different towns the pair had to move between. Some places Benny was behaved, not getting into arguments with people all that often, and other towns was met with scorn and an eye of suspicion. His being a beastkin in Sophos was not the best of situations. The political climate in their world varied, with both humans and beastkin putting up with each other at best, but the lion's country held more favoritism towards humans. Some theories agreed upon by scholars noted the beasts as descended from monsters, which even the beastkin agree upon in more academic circles.
Concern regarding whether Benny had the instincts of a monster within him cropped up often. Mythology and legends of Sophos, and even actual history, was riddled with creatures who terrorized villagers and were the result of petty gods.
At times the lion just did not fit in either in general. While beastkin tend to be sturdier and larger than humans, Benny was a case of having a much more immense stature than others. Of course, as a cub it was not to extremes, but the different was noticeable, and became more obvious as he grew up. This caused the view of him being a big, dumb beast to be prominent in his life. Yet, this was not without truth. His mother and him were not wealthy by any means, the constant traveling meant there were little in the way of relationships made, and being on the move meant Benedictus was unable to gain an education. He learned what he needed to for survival's sake. No trade or skill was easy for him to comprehend either, even magic, which he was tested at one point for a near inability to use a simple Fire or Cure spell.
Over time his life remained stable, though never stepping too far out of bounds, and not accomplishing much. In truth, the lion continued to look up to those heroes of old as noticed how uneasy people around him became. Poverty and the dividing line between social classes were skewed. On top of that Alena began to grow weary, her body unable to perform tasks as she once could. He wanted to make people happy, being the sort of young man with a dumb grin on his face most of the time, and the reality kicked in of how useless Benedikt had been throughout his youth. The one thing he can do is fight, that was was certain. His physical strength mattered to the few odd jobs he managed to obtain. Even these were not enough once his mother collapsed.
Luck had it the current city they resided in held the Imperator's Coliseum. Typical as it were, this place held a slew of gladiatorial fights, with rumored and confirmed monetary riches. Benedictus brought up the idea to his mother of his entering these brawls, with that wide, childish grin and upbeat eyes. He knew his strength was of little use elsewhere, and she will not have to worry about his getting arrested out in the streets for being a defender of the weak. Perhaps the latter was not the best bit of convincing. The woman insisted her son, despite being an grown adult at this time, not risk losing his life in the coliseum. He understood, though the male lion was convinced by his mother's tried eyes more so than anything to not go along with such brutal acts of violence.
Yet Benny was a simple and not so bright man, giving into temptation and entering a tournament under the shroud of the night when his weary mother began to rest earlier. He did not come out unharmed. Expecting a simple fight was his first mistake. However, the lion managed to come out on top during his first fight, the energized viewers noting the newcomer was much more durable than a normal man. But this revelation was nothing new, as Benny had realized in the past how his ineptitude at anything skilled or magical was the cost of his phenomenal strength and endurance. Despite his bleeding out, combat invigorated the man, having found a place where he can unleash his true power without concern for the consequences.
Each night, and into earlier hours of the days, the lion returned. Due to the impressions left upon the coliseum owners and attendants, he was allowed a place to train, fight, heal up, and repeat to his heart's content. Reckless traits began to reveal themselves. Often he began to taunt his opponents, allowing his body to feel constant torment from each, sharp strike and proper spell, running into the fray and beating the opposition of the day into submission. Never dead, however. Benedictus's physical condition improved to a dramatic effect, becoming even more of a brute than he was prior to the gladiator scene.
Though he discovered a secret regarding the more underground intentions of the arena. In truth the reliance on powerful combatants were meant as forced volunteers, so to speak, for a hidden government deal to imbue people with runes. At the time, using rune alterations upon one's body was illegal, as the side effects were terrible, uncontrolled barrages of magic. The lion was not fond of this discovery, yet his massive frame was easy to spot. He was, however, not punished for his intrusion. A chance at more power was offered. It was true he had difficulties against mages, and the man desired the power to gain more from his constant brawls. To some the beast was a fool, perhaps a truth which proved itself to this day.
But he learned Green Magic. His lack of intellect was no longer a burden, the sole cost being a painful ritual involving brands, and to follows the whims of his superiors.
His arms wracked with pain for days after that, the irritation flowing through his body afterwards. Some joked the lion was more monster than beastkin, as Benedikt took to the ritual much better than most others. A few rumors began to spread as well, even more so after he returned to the combat arena. With the ability to defend himself further, he was able to push his limits to higher extremes. More reckless endeavors came upon each fight, the newfound magic assisting his body learning to take damage, combat now becoming a sort of high. Brands no longer writhed in pain upon casting the more the lion cast magic.
This was good, right?
Orders became more concerning in between fights, ranging from bodyguard work to giving physical 'warnings' to specific individuals. Despite the lion's bulk, he was still bashed in the head with some harsh attacks, which had affected his brain capacity and making him a bit slower over time. He knew these were bad things these people were doing, but was unable to figure how to get around this. Critical thinking was a chore for his mind. His mind screamed at the lion to say something, and months went by until he did so. At first he was given the confirmation his concerns were heard, and in his foolishness the lion kept it at that. A mistake at that. Benedikt's mother, who at this point experienced bouts of collapsing, was nabbed as a threat if the lion disobeyed. He tried to call a bluff, another mistake which lead to widened eyes staring off upon the screams of the aging, beastkin woman.
Rage was a terrible thing which blocked out the memory. Within some amount of time part of the coliseum was covered in the blood of unfortunate victims. He did not know how long, nor was that his concern, as the acts sprawled out before him were all that were needed for confirmation. Some of the people killed had done nothing more than try and stop a feral beastkin. Right, the lion knew he went feral the moment he watched his dear mother get murdered in front of his eyes. The red had stained the man's body and fur, sheer durability the sole reason he survived. A rare state no beastkin ever wished to be in. More often than not, a beastkin who went feral, whether by a clicked instinct or emotional trauma, was put down in an instant. But not him. He was a frightened, big, dumb feline who fled the scene and escaped the city by way of his boathouse. Just his now.
Some years had passed, time held by obtaining various, odd jobs within a town. What once had been a bright eyed, cheerful man was replaced with a grim and stoic feline. Enough to survive, and some tension had lifted off the lion's shoulders knowing his former travesty was no longer in prime focus. Good. Few in the his current place of residence spoke more than a few words that were not a job description, as otherwise Benedictus was off training his body and taking down a monster or three. Tempting as it were, the lion noted the children had taken an interest in him, but never did he care to give them a story of heroics. Right now such things as justice and the power to defend the weak were nonsense. Nobody was worth his time, the sole friend he obtained being the next bottle of cheap wine.
Any troubles the town he lived around were never his concern. The less conflict he dealt with, the better his chances of not doing anything dumb, or even enabling the risk of going feral again. Even when a more organized pack of roving criminals decided to siege the otherwise small, quiet town nearby. Benedictus was in the process of wandering there in hopes of supplies, but turned around to head back home until the worst was over. Guilt was a powerful thing. Those nosy kids were a pain trying to ignore once a few of them started crying. So, the lion went after the ones at fault. And kept going.
And going.
Nobody in that group of bandits expected a hulking mass to ravage through and maul the ever living snot out of them. Once all was said and done, Benny tried to leave and go home, perhaps moving on to a different town now that he drew attention, but the townsfolk made him stay. Despite the fact the man was a beastkin, the humans who lived there were more than appreciative, if rather nervous. Lost feelings cropped up within the big feline's heart, one of the stories he heard back in the day of brave warriors striking down those who harmed the innocent. He was no hero, but the man felt like one. Those wide smiles on everyone there became the key he needed to exit his blockade of a heart. Now, the lion realized, he had the potential to do great things, perhaps even recuperate from a once blood filled past.
Changing his ways proved to be difficult. Few places were as keen as the town he rescued to welcome the man with open arms, and finding jobs was difficult unless it involved combat. Bounties as he found out were a prime source of income. Everywhere was filled with the random criminal or monster who proved to be a concern, and the lion succeeded in varying degrees, from complete success to beaten and failed. When Benny was unable to find a bounty, he rediscovered the temptation of gladiatorial battles. Despite his reckless nature, he kept an eye on how each coliseum ran their business. A couple matches, and then he was out. The lion did, however, gain fame in the circuit once again, but never remained in one place to reign as ongoing champion.
Over time, and with experience, life improved. Benny proved to be a more than fearsome adversary, tackling larger monsters and even dragging a few back alive. If it were not for his odd amount of bulk, he would have been given an eye regarding how he took down a monster bounty all on his own. There was no other way he was able to hide his forearm brands, which he had to play off as mere tattoos. After all, the means by which he gained such foci were still illegal. Yet this allowed the man to show off another side of himself, gained through his crowd pleasing battles. Often Benedictus was found after a job regaling his acts of heroism, regardless of whether it was a job or he hopped in on someone in need, his tales going from full on truth to stretching part of the imagination.
Hey, the guy has had more than a few bumps to the head.
Benny loved his current lifestyle. For once in his life he was accomplishing something. While a big, dumb brute still, that was why he managed to sustain himself and witness just how adrenaline fueled those heroic stories of old were in truth. One rumor spread, however, and a familiar bit of chatter at that. Benedictus was a full on beastkin appearance wise, yes, but his stature was still closer to a monster than a typical person. A scholar he encountered at one point in time even stated there was a high percentage the blood of monsters coursed through his veins, and while not accusatory, held factual evidence.
The big dummy let the rumors fly over his head. None of it stopped the lion from doing what he loved, albeit, there were more than a few times he went overboard. At this point in his life there was nothing else for him anyways, so he did not mind. A funny thing, as despite his levels of physical activity, there was a sort of laziness about the man on his off days. Floating down the river in his refurbished boathouse that mom used to uphold to who knows where remained a wonderful experience. The lion's eyes drifted off to sleep on a particular day, the current a bit more rowdy than usual. He shrugged. Benedictus was confident in his swimming abilities, although once man and boathouse vanished, everything crash landed into his life, pounded him on the head, and shunted the lion off to a whole new realm.
Appearance:
- Height: 6'10"
- Weight: 605 lbs.
- Wears a chain link collar of sorts around his neck, because fashionable Final Fantasy edge style.
- Branded on the underside of his forearms are runic tattoos, through which he channels his magic.
- Overall is just a hulking brute of a lion man. Might have a few scars here and there.
- Not the sort of man to wear shirts, he still has some decency. Befitting his country of birth, he wears a multi-layered skirt of fabric called a pteruges, which extends to the knees. (Writer's note: for more detail, refer to typical armor of Greek or Roman warriors, who wear the exact same article of clothing) Under this he also wears what are effectively shorts of a near similar length.
- Prefers to go barefoot with ankle wrappings, but is not against forgoing the wraps and wearing sandals.
History On Li: Upon awakening from his deep, wake up a city block levels of slumber, the lion opened his eyes to discover something odd. There was no soft padding underneath his back. His might filled paw hands felt the harsh earth, and no longer did he hear the sloshing of river water. Benedictus's stuff was gone, and he was not a happy camper about that. Same regarding the odd creature who decided to swarm up and strike at the lion, as a matter of fact. Yet, fighting them off was no issue, despite the fact these things continued to rush at the man from every corner and hillside. For once in his life, the hordes he crushed with his hands started to gain an advantage. His tough body grew weary after days of constant battle, although Benny pushed himself to keep going. In the distance he saw a city of some kind, and figured it best to reach there.
The Life Sphere, as it was called, turned out to be a place where others were in a similar predicament. Inner politics ran amok as well, something about having to restore this planet while having the simultaneous issue of another trying to blow it up so they can all move elsewhere. Or something to that effect. He might not have payed as much attention as he claimed. On a lighter note, Benedictus found both new allies and the fact his boathouse just showed up in the residential district... out of water. That thing was not going anywhere soon. Of course, his goal of living here for the moment meant he allied himself with the 'saving the planet' aspect of the population. Unfortunate he had to fill out a citizenship form before the lion can reclaim his property in official terms, despite the fact he was still allowed to live in his house.
It... took a while. There was the issue of not being able to read all that well, and comprehending even the simplest of legal terms was a quest in its own right.
He managed, eventually.
Primary Attacks (3)
Brawler: Benedictus is, first and foremost, and unarmed combatant with a knack for fists, feet, and even headbutts if he so desires. He may or may not have had a few concussions doing the latter of the three examples. His size does tend make his swings rougher, though has dabbled in boxing and swifter attack styles, which allowed him to grasp a few techniques from different mediums of unarmed combat. [LIGHT STR Attack, 7% damage]
Feral Brutality: While magic and brute force do not always go hand in hand, there are moments where the two intertwine and create a powerful blow. The man is not a master mage by any means due to his discipline, but has learned to incorporate small bursts of magic into his strikes be it a single punch, kick, slam, clothesline, or some other attack. Rumored to have taken a small boat and used this ability on someone during a slight state of a drunken stupor. Can take a -1 penalty (3 max) to increase the damage by 3% (additional 9% maximum). [MEDIUM-HEAVY STR Attack, 19% base damage, 28% max]
Wrestling: Having the physique of a barbarian and the skills of a monk tend to fuse together in phenomenal ways. Grappling opponents just happen to fit that archetype. Once within the lion's grasp, there is little hope of escaping if supernatural elements are not involved. Of course, with him the effects go further. This attack mode can swing the captive opponent into the ground, knee, or other such variation. While he can grab someone and beat on them often, it does take more effort than if someone is in a grapple already, a good hold increasing the damage. [MEDIUM STR attack, 14% damage; boosted to 19% damage if the target is already GRAPPLED by Benedikt. Does NOT give the GRAPPLED condition despite the name.]
Special Attacks (3)
Spartan Lariat: Despite the heavy bulk, even he learned to have some movement capabilities to garner more distance across the battlefield and make it his own. Rearing back his arms, which have a decent reach due to the lion's size, he begins to spiral around with both arms extended. While doing so Benedictus soars forward in a line, sucking in any enemies nearby into the attack. He deals constant damage while the attack is in effect, which releases any unfortunate victim. Due to the disorientating effects, this move has a 40% chance to STUN its victims for 1 turn.[MEDIUM STR Attack, 16% damage total, can suck in up to 3 opponents, 2 turn cooldown]
Nemean Pounce: Yet another result of quick magic infusions, this attack provides a source to nab escaping opponents or a tool for reaching that ledge just out of reach. The surge of magic surrounds Benedictus in a blazing aura, charging his figure towards any direction he desires. While he can move, he still needs to hit an opponent in order for the attack to deal damage. Upon hitting an opponent, the lion keeps his foe in a grab and charges him or her into the ground. This strike deals damage and forces the unfortunate opponent into a GRAPPLE automatically. Normal rules for Grappling apply after this attack.[HEAVY STR Attack, 22% damage total, Costs 2 Actions, 2 Post Cooldown]
Green Magic: This school of magic is the lion's bread and butter for spellcasting. Unlike White or Black magic, this is a set of buff and support spells meant as boons for its user and allies. As this is a formal level of magic, Benedictus required a need for a focus, which turns out to be the brands on his inner forearms. Since he also cannot keep casting without pause in this world and the previous, the man uses MP (Magic Point) charges. At the beginning of each battle, he starts with 2 MP, and gains 1 MP at the end of each of his turns, except when a Green Magic spell is cast that same turn.. There is a maximum capacity of 4 MP.
Spells can be upcast by using additional MP, strengthening in effectiveness as said spell is upgraded. The baseline effects, which cost a mere 1 MP, can target only one ally or himself, but this can change dependent on the overall spell used. Regardless of whether the spell is upcast, each buff lasts for 3 posts, with a 3 post cooldown as per standard rules. However, the same series of spell cannot be used on the same target again until 3 posts after the effect ends. For example, someone under Barthundara cannot benefit from the Barthunder series, even if a stronger version such as Barthundaja is used. This applies for weaker versions of the same spell. The spells Benny can cast and upcast are as follows:
Barfire Sequence
- Barfire - Costs 1 MP. Upon casting, a crimson aura with diminutive, lashes of flame surrounds the target. While this spell is up, Fire elemental attacks used against him have their damage mitigated by 5%, and the target cannot be under the BURN status effect.
- Barfira - Costs 2 MP. As Barfire, but can hit up to 3 allies, one of which can be himself.
- Barfiraga - Costs 3 MP. As Barfire, but the damage mitigation against Fire attacks is now 8%.
- Barfiraja - Costs 4 MP. As Barfiraga, but can hit up to 3 allies, one of which can be himself.
Barblizzard Sequence
- Barblizzard - Costs 1 MP. A cyan aura encompasses the target, specks of ice appearing and breaking on occasion. While this spell is up, Ice elemental attacks have their damage mitigated by 5%, and the target cannot be under the FROZEN status effect.
- Barblizzara - Costs 2 MP. As Barblizzard, but can hit up to 3 allies, one of which can be himself.
- Barblizzaga - Costs 3 MP. As Barblizzard, but the damage mitigation against Ice elemental attacks is now 8%.
- Barblizzaja - Costs 4 MP. As Barblizzaga, but can hit up to 3 allies, one of which can be himself.
Barthunder Sequence
- Barthunder - Costs 1 MP. With this spell, a yellow aura surges around the target, tiny flashes of lightning appearing on occasion. While this spell is up, Lighting/Electrical elemental attacks have their damage mitigated by 5%, and the target cannot be under the STUN status effect.
- Barthundara - Costs 2 MP. As Barthunder, but can hit up to 3 allies, one of which can be himself.
- Barthundaga - Costs 3 MP. As Barthunder, but the damage mitigation against Lightning/Electrical elemental attacks is now 8%.
- Barthundaja - Costs 4 MP. As Barthundaga, but can hit up to 3 allies, one of which can be himself.
Baraero Sequence
- Baraero - Costs 1 MP. The target is surrounded by a chartreuse-green aura, wisps on wind flicking every so often. While this spell is up, Wind/Air elemental attack have their damage mitigated by 5%, and the target gains a +2 bonus to Dodge attacks.
- Baraerora - Costs 2 MP. As Baraero, but cant hit up to 3 allies, one of which can be himself.
- Baraeroga - Costs 3 MP. As Baraero, but the damage mitigation against Wind/Air attacks is now 8%, and the Dodge bonus is now +3.
- Baraeroja - Costs 4 MP. As Baraeroga, but can hit up to 3 allies, one of which can be himself.
Final Smash (1)
OLYMPUS MONS: Unleashing a roar so powerful it shakes the immediate area, a magical aura surges around Benedictus, the branded tattoos etched on the underside of his forearms glowing fierce. He then slams the ground with both fists, the shockwave causing a quick stun on his foes before the earth erupts into an ever rising mountain. The formation is dotted with various, Greek architecture. Each, unfortunate opponent is bound within the architecture, unable to escape. Benedictus then leaps high into the air, before crashing back down with his fist reared back, the oncoming punch striking the mountain an slicing it right down the middle. At the end of it all, the mountain explodes with bright energy and causing further damage to the lion's foes. He stands from the rubble unharmed. [AoE, 40% damage]
Smash Spirits (3)
MIKE HAGGAR - FINAL FIGHT +1 CONSTITUTION | RAVEN BRANWEN - RWBY +1 DEXTERITY | SUMMER ROSE - RWBY +1 DEXTERITY |
Other Info:
- Image/Face used is Arslan from the phone game Housamo/Tokyo Afterschool Summoners. This is for appearance reference, though the general idea remains the same.
- Though it has not been an issue, as the man has gone feral before, there is always the chance the lion will do so again. A higher chance at that. When it had shown its ugly mug after the first instance, he was lucky few were around and Benny reverted to his usual demeanor in a short time.
- Loves mending small rips in clothing, if someone were to ask.
- Is 38 years of age. He's not that old!
