Forgive me if this is messy! This is just an area of a story I like to entertain myself writing every now and then!
Basics_______________
World/Area Name:
The Sunblighted City, Above and Under.
Brief Summary:
A city created above ground centuries after humanity was sent underground by a mysterious "disease" spread by the sun's rays. Conceived as a way to retake the world, it just became an excuse for the wealthy to drive the less fortunate into a place where they will surely get Sunblight, both unaware of what Sunblight even is, and the struggle between monsters and humans happening only to those who know.
Setting______________________
Technology:
In terms of technology, the above part of the city has clearly fallen behind. Electricity and phone lines are the biggest innovation that have been recreated, but it is still very rare to actually have the means to use it, especially in terms of light. Most people treat these innovations as just another sight to see, and some aren't even aware of their purpose. However, in weapons, they are generous. The City is known to be dangerous, and with the only time to avoid the Sunblight being night, most people are armed with a flashlight and either knives or a single gun. "Medicine" is similarly stunted, and most injuries having to be healed with herbal remedies unless one can manage to find someone who have brought medicine from the underground.
The Underground, in contrast, is almost futuristic in comparison. All homes are a separate, soundproof area that connects to all basics of life through a spherical elevator. This is such that the fortunate families need not even interact with other people if they don't want to, and even then they can just communicate through a video call. Disease is easy to repel here, where there is a vaccine for nearly everything. Strangely enough, despite all this, nobody truly knows how their weapons are in terms of progress. That is, only those who know of monsters know that their weapons are being made bigger, badder...what could be so big to require such weapons?
Sunblight have access to both technologies, especially if working for the Council of the Luna, and with some having unnatural powers, are able to enhance them like charging a device with electricity far better than regular. They mostly rely on their abilities to fight, but it's been known for Weres to utilize guns even in their animal form.
Architecture:
Thanks to the Sunblight, there are no such things as tall buildings or windows anymore. All buildings are low and long above ground. This has resulted in a gigantic city with not much to show for it. Buildings also tend to have extensions that shade huge portions, so that if one needs to be out during the day, they have areas to avoid direct sunlight.
Underground can mostly be described as vertical, with everything connected to everything. Both areas are made out of a futuristic metal, which rarely breaks and doesn't reflect light, giving a dark overdrop to everything.
Climate:
The weather rapidly changes between being a very cold area to a very hot area above ground, in contrast to the underground, where climate never changes. Now that the city is created, the people have realized something. Every "day" is the length of two days, and the sun stays hot as ever in the skies, and every "night" is two nights, and these appear to be getting longer every year. Thanks to this, day names change in the middle of every day or night cycle.
Terrain:
The terrain itself in the city is very flat, to better accommodate their buildings. However, outside the city, just a few miles out, wilderness hits fast. Most of the surrounding area is forests and mountains. This leaves them with the only water sources being dangerous to get to, so the underground has "generously" allowed them to tap into their water supply, but only a finite amount, making water less of a commodity than one would imagine.
Biology___________________
Races/People:
Humans: Humans, you know them, you (hopefully) are one! Known for their intelligence but lack of any natural weapons.
Sunblighted: The transformation of a human from Sunblight. There are two types, but they recognize each other as the same species. There are the Were, Sunblighted who look virtually human but can transform into their Sunblighted form. Their forms tend to look near the same as the animals now, but bigger and more humanoid. This can be any animal, from the impressive Wolf to a not so impressive but useful Mouse. They experience no changes from the sun or moon. Then, there are the Beasts. Beasts are Sunblighted who practically explode into a new form, an experience known to be painful and confusing. Their forms almost always look like a mythical being of some kind, ranging from Dragon to even zombie-like. They retain intelligence, but know have to deal with completely animalistic instincts and the fact they no longer look human. They tend to be more powerful than Weres, but their powers fluctuate with the sun and moon, they are more bestial and powerful in the day, and more humanoid and weaker at night. Both Weres and Beasts band together, and avoid most humans.
Flora/Fauna:
Ironically, thanks to humans disappearing for some time, flora and fauna are thriving and have become very strong. Animals are hard to tell apart from monsters, being larger than animals we are used to, and possessing intelligence almost child-like. Most avoid humans, but stay unnaturally close in the nearby forests, except for birds. Thanks to this, birds are an easy method of communication and can even be seen playing with children...if they were any bigger, humans would be using them as transportation too. Flora has become almost unnaturally colorful, and most humans assume this is because of the Sunblight and refuse to eat them...the feeling is not mutual. Plants will now derive nutrients out of anything, and corpses are no exception. They also like to curl around buildings and have become the local pest, making a local job out of cutting them away every now and then. Sunblighted can be seen devouring both plants and hunting animals, practically built for it.
The Underground retained earthly flora and fauna, bred to make more meat or harvest.
Wildlife:
Names have not changed from what an animal used to be, regardless of changes. Just a few examples.
"Wolf": Practically the only natural enemy of the Sunblighted of the city. Wolves had gained claws and an uncanny abily yo stand and use their claws like a cat's. It is unknown if they have formed a telepathy or are simply intelligent, but packs now move like a singular entity. Hunting Sunblighted usually need multiple allies to win a fight with them.
"Deer": Deer look virtually unchanged, except for one important fact. Male and female both have antlers that extend down their whole body and connect to their spine. The antlers are brightly colored, suggesting venomous qualities.
"Crows": Frequently seen in the city, crows are now the size of eagles and have the mimicking of a parrot. They are friendly enough, but have a quality of helping the Sunblighted instinctively, regardless of danger involved.
Diseases:
Normal diseases have been eliminated in the Underground, and even above ground, it seems difficult to catch a life-threatening illness.
The primary concern is Sunblight. Sunblight is known publicly as a disease spread from the sun's rays that takes a hold of the human body and drives it made, whereupon eventually the person w-will feel an urge to attain any weapons they can get a hold of and go on a rampage. Thus, they report anyone who starts to walk or act strange, or begins to display animal-like qualities.
In reality, the disease is more than that. While spread through the sun's rays, the amount of exposure differing from person to person, is true, there is more. It doesn't just affect the mind, but the body. Changes are small at first, horns, fangs and the like, and then one of two things happen. Either the person erupts into a bestial form, never to look more than remotely human again (these are the usual rampagers) or abruptly look human again (A phenomenon called being a Were among the Sunblighted). Both complete the transformation. From then on then, their instincts won't recognise humans as their species, so if they are hungry a him an looks like a genuine meal. The Council of Luna are known to stop their rampages, kill them, and capture them. Nobody really knows how they are so good at this, or why they need to capture them...only the Sunblighted captured know of the deal given, to hunt their own kind.
Evolution:
Evolution seems to have been kicked into overdrive recently. Every creature is gaining a more efficient body, more intelligence, even abilities outside the realm of reality. Even now, animals and flora spontaneously gain new looks and powers without any clear path.
There are talking that the Sunblighted are the next stage of human evolution.
The Language______________
Cultural Languages:
Most languages have been lost after the whole, "the sun is destroying all civilization" situation and going underground, as few people survived that. Thus, there is a common language that is mostly English and includes words such as "Sunblight" and any other words they can twist to serve for understanding.
Example Phrasing:
"I wouldn' worry tha' much...those Sunblighters gonna die when da' Council find them out." - Above ground.
"Don't let them down here! Far as I know, they bring the Sunblight with them, those sun-loving freaks!" - Underground.
Body Language/Lingo:
Touch has become a personal affair, and even bowing have become something to do only when feeling safe. One is looked at as a righteously safe person if they greet with a simple nod. By this point, only the underground even shakes hands anymore.
The Sunblighted, being very different shapes, only follow these rules if humanoid. Otherwise, they follow general rules like keeping your tail down, not making unnecessary noise, and never baring teeth as a greeting.
Popular Names:
Simple names reign in this city, most have lost their meaning anyway, so the easier to say, the better. Stuff like Cara, Sam, Gabe, and Leo. Since names are so short, nicknames don't exist unless you have a rare long name.
True Culture___________________
Right/Wrong:
Generally, right is portrayed as taking care of your family, regardless of anything. However, paradoxically, wrong has become having physical changes, as the Sunblighted are seen as monsters.
In contrast, Sunblighted typically see taking care of each other as right, and some see protecting humans as right. On the other hand, betraying those who have revealed their Sunblight is seen as the lowest of the low, espicia lly if reported to the Council of Luna.
Culture Differences:
The type of people usually define the culture. Humans tend to have amazing sense of care for those connected by blood, making family unique to them. However, this same feeling makes the vastly different Sunblighted unwelcome to them. They also feel betrayal deeply, such as a Were hiding their form from them. They celebrate yearly festivities, such as birthdays or the moon increasing its time in the sky.
In contrast, Sunblighted believe in helping one another, but their own survival is more important to them. Already used to change, they are usually open-minded, but that means that their care for others predicaments ate usually lacking. They can survive, why can't you? They celebrate the monthly moons, and are especially escorted for blood moons.
Class System:
The general class system is shown by where people live. If you could afford it, you and your family stayed in the safety of the underground. If you couldn't, you were moved to the city the moment it was completed.
Sunblighted have to hide their features and forms completely if they are seen in public, as they are reported or attacked on sight. On the other hand, humans feel in danger, as new Sunblighted tend to eat whatever they can get their hands on, including humans.
Historical Cultural Background:
Earthly cultures were preserved in the underground and, while simplistic, have mostly persevered.
In terms of Sunblight, their cultures formed out of a need to decide what parts of their human nature and animalistic instincts should be shown, if at all.
Economy______________________
Basic Economic System:
In the Underground, the economy works how it does now, through money.
Above ground, it is mostly a barter system.
Currency:
The Underground has retained the dollar system, but have abandoned low currency such as cents or even singular dollars, ensuring those on land have to het lucky to even get back in the Underground again. In the surface, any jewels or irrelevant things such as jewelry have completely lost any value, replaced in value by things like clothing or food.
Jobs:
Having a job in both above and underground tends to be passed on through families. It is incredibly rare to get a job on your own, if your family grows crops, you will likely grow crops.
Weres follow this set-up, while Beasts typically hunt for food and share it with new Sunblighted.
The Government/Justice System:
A government of sorts have emerged without any fanfare. The Council of the Luna. This Council is the one that made the city, and keeps a hawks eye on it, advising all humans to stay away from the sun and report strange activity. Only those working for them have full knowledge of the Sunblight, and what they do. In an attempt to keep Earth a human's world, they capture Sunblighted and kill the unwilling. Sunblighted are promised rights if they participate in killing these unwilling, but even the stupidest habe noticed they are treated like animals. The Council assigns each Sunblighted a partner, human, and they cannot leave the Underground except to hunt. Even children Sunblighted are expected to fight, and none can disobey orders.
Naturally, with this, most humans and Sunblighted live by themselves in a primitive village-like society...serperate, of course.
Hobbies/Essentials________________
Art/Entertainment:
Carving and graffiti have made a resurgence in the city, bored youths drawing on the walls until there are lion heads glaring from the ground or a beautiful landscape painted in dirty, novice paint on the walls. Generally though, most art is seen as a frivolity that one doesn't need.
Music is popular with the Sunblighted, their animalistic how's, chirps, or haunting wailing making unique music.
Clothing:
Colorful clothing is the norm underground, as the residents are trusted to fill it with color. Above ground, the more you blend in, the better, so darker colors and green are in. Ironically, both sides make their own clothing.
Naturally, Sunblighted don't where clothes unless they are human-looking.
Communication Methods:
While phones do exist, them and video communication is mostly used underground. On the surface most people will write on the walls of one's house or just talk face-to-face.
Sunblighted communicate openly through their cries. Their cries typically carry a message, and some knowledgeable Beast have even taught some Morse Code, which most are incorporating in their cries. This knowledge came either from some denizen of the underground, or from a worker of the Council of the Luna.
School/Education:
Like jobs, knowledge is usually passed on from parents. Even Sunblighted tend to learn from those that have changed longer than them. Nobody habe even thought of making a school system yet.
Food:
Food is purchased underground, and only specific families have to worry about the task of growing or raising it.
Above ground, it is technically free, but unless you habe something about as valuable as food to trade, one needs to catch or grow their own food. Food is produced during the dangerous time of day, so hunting is usually done to make up for any crops that die die to the sun staying out too long. Crows cannot be eaten, lest you be accused of deliberately eating such a useful creature.
Sunblighted can eat most plants and animals, and will hunt during the day to try and stay away from humans.
Love:
Love and affection defiantly exists even in hard times. Who you love have started to become a non-problem, but it is expected to have a child at some point, so the family continues to live.
The issue has become a little confusing among Sunblighted lose all indications of gender, or even switch, when they catch the Sunblight. Attraction has become less important than caring for the mind, or ability to defend or hunt, or even fight. Rather animal in nature, it is still love.
Travel:
Most travel by foot, or claws, or paws. If you can fly, you can, but keep out of sight of the Council.
Religion_______________
Gods/Deities:
A diety does exist in the form of the sun, but whether it is benevolent or not depends on what form your body is even in. This also determines whether one thinks it is a god or the tool of one. Humans believe it is an evil force that deigns to turn them into abominations, Sunblighted believe it the tool of a god that wants to bring out humanity's godly forms.
The moon actually isn't a diety, but people still pray in the hopes it will be one eventually.
Religion Types:
Humans and Sunblighted celebrate their source of safety, which means humans worship the moon and Sunblighted sing the praises of the sun. To this end, humans usually pray for the moon to stay long in the privacy of their home. Worship is more primitive among the Sunblighted, being a new belief, but it has become known that burying a thing of value to you or food is a legitimate form of worship.
